Maria Naidu strives to make dance that is accesible to a large audience.
Her primary tool is movement but she also uses other artforms, often in collaboration with other artists, to find ways of expression that best communicate her ideas. Her choreography is recognized as textural multitude combined with theatrical details. She researches her movement continuously since she belives that every choreographic work has it’s own identity.
Educated at the Balettakademien in Gothenburg and later at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York City. Debut as a dancer in 1987 and as a choreographer in 1989. She was a soloist with The New York based, international touring company, Jennifer Muller/THE WORKS from 1991-1998 adn took a hiatus from her own choreographic work at that time.
After 13 years in New York and eight with THE WORKS she returned to Europe and her own creativity. Since moving she has presented and produced her own works as well as commisions for the opera and theatreplays (Norrlandsoperan, Vadstenaakademien, Raseborgsoperaförening, Malmö Opera, Malmö Stadsteater, Teater 23, Teaterhögskolan Malmö, Helsingborgs Stadsteater), perfromed in a myriad of stageartproductions and has held the position of Rehearsal director at Norrdans (SE) and later at Carte Blanche, The national ensemble for contemporary dance in Norway. Her work has been shown in Sweden, Finland, Japan, England, USA, Germany, Austria, India, Denmark, Brazil, Norway, France, Switzerland and in Cuba.
Maria is an accredited Mullerapproach pedagogue and teaches proffessionals all over the world since 1992. She is an initiator of the choreographers cooperative RÖRELSEN-koreografer i Skåne. Since 2004 she is being produced by the non-profit organization armar&ben. In 2014 she started Miscellaneous AB, a company that combines art and technology. The company is part of the business incubator The Creative Plot at Ideon Innovation, Lund. In MISC, she combines the knowledge she has collected during her 30 year long career as an internationally active, professional dancer, pedagogue and choreographer.
